6th Annual Chocolate Tour Supports Cancer Research
Walk, Bike or Run for a Cure
If you enjoy walking, biking or running, the 6th Annual Chocolate Tour is the event for you! The Tour takes off from the Milton Hershey School Campus, 665 Brook Drive, Hershey, Pa., on Saturday, August 6, 2016. The aim of this exciting event is to increase awareness and raise funds solely to support and advance cancer research at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Hershey Pa. New this year are prizes for teams that raise the most funds, show the most spirit, and have the most members.
“Last year, we raised over $70,000, with a record-breaking participation of 1035,” said Gavin Robertson, Ph.D., Chocolate Tour Event Director. “This year, our goal is to reach 1500 participants and to raise $100,000.”
If cycling is your passion, you will love the Will Stone Cycling Event. The tour route is set in the beautiful countryside of Central Pennsylvania. You will enjoy rides through Amish farm country with its wooded areas and covered bridges, as well as touring areas surrounding the picturesque towns of Hershey, Elizabethtown, and Lititz. Whether you’re new to cycling or a pro, there’s a course suited to your comfort level. You can register for a 10, 25, 35, 50, 75, or 100 mile ride and, if you sign up by July 11, you’ll be guaranteed to receive a commemorative t-shirt on the day of the ride. By riding the 100-mile route you will pass through five world-famous Amish covered bridges. If you choose the 75-mile option you will pass through and two covered bridges. Cyclists are invited to sample local chocolate at the rest stops and will be provided with a meal after the race. You can register on Active.com or by mail-in registration at www.thechocolatetour.com.
If running or walking are more to your liking, why not sign up for the Mike Geltrude 5K or 10K walk, or the Foreman Foundation 5K or 10K race? With rest stops every mile, runners and walkers also will be able to enjoy samples of local chocolate. The 5K and 10K runs are timed race events. An awards ceremony will be held at the end of the run/race for the 5K and 10K runners. Medals will be awarded for overall first, second and third place, male and female; and masters, male and female. Medals also will be awarded for the 5K and 10K run by age category – 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.
“Nearly everyone either knows someone affected by cancer or perhaps they have experienced cancer personally,” continued Robertson. “Raising money for cancer research is imperative to finding a cure. Advances in technology and in our understanding of the genetic underpinnings of cancer means that today’s investment in research is likely to benefit patients in the very near future. Your participation in the 2016 Chocolate Tour will help us find better treatments and faster cures for patients everywhere.”
