April is National Volunteer Month, and the Downtown Hershey Association (DHA) would not exist without the consistent help of its volunteers. During the 2018 Life on Chocolate event series, almost 100 volunteers donated hundreds of hours to make each event run smoothly.
Our volunteers help in a number of ways. Each Life on Chocolate event requires a planning committee who meet for months in advance to organize vendors, entertainment, activities, and marketing. On event days, our volunteers help with setup and tear down, provide information to event guests, offer hospitality to vendors or musicians, sell DHA merchandise, and more.
The DHA also has a designated Brand Team that works with our Hershey High School interns throughout the year to create consistent imaging, social media, and blog content. And our board of directors are all volunteers who lend their time and expertise to help guide our organization throughout the year.
Many of our volunteers come back again and again because of the enjoyment they find in their involvement. Whether it’s getting a sneak peek at products for sale at an event, or being able to share ideas and input during event planning, there are many benefits to being involved.
However, volunteers consistently say the best part of their experience is meeting fellow volunteers who appreciate all that Downtown Hershey has to offer. Through his experiences with the DHA, “I’ve met a lot of people who love this community and see the good in this place,” said David Whitenack. After volunteering at Market on Chocolate, Kevin Schafer “immediately fell in love with the energy of this group.” Michelle Kopp appreciated being welcomed by the “Saturday crew” of regular volunteers at Market, and plans to come back for the 2019 season.
The DHA would like to thank all of its volunteers for their consistent time and support. Everything about this organization depends on people like you, and our town is better because of your teamwork and selflessness. We hope you’ll join us again in 2019 – and bring a friend!
Our first opportunity to volunteer this year will be at our Art Show & Culturefest on Saturday, May 18. This celebration of global arts, music & food with a local flavor will be a fun and free day for everyone – and we need plenty of help to make it successful. Consider spending part of your time at this event as a volunteer. Click here to volunteer at Art Show & Culturefest, and check The Wrapper often for opportunities as the rest of our Life on Chocolate events get underway.
