TownePlace Suites, a Marriott brand, is being proposed for a portion of land on the periphery of Downtown Hershey. The property is situated in an area that would make the proposed hotel a defining gateway feature for travelers arriving in Downtown Hershey from the west. If approved, the hotel will be located on West Chocolate Avenue just east of Hillcrest Road and the project will require the demolition of six houses that are currently in disrepair. The developer of the proposed hotel is the same group that constructed the Courtyard by Marriott Hershey Chocolate Avenue which sits on the east end of Hershey on the former Miller Chevrolet site.
The project was recommended for approval by the Derry Township Planning Commission in November, and it will be reviewed by the Downtown Core Design Board on November 26 prior to going before the Board of Supervisors.
The developer believes they have given careful attention to the township’s standards in designing the site. Several elements of the project to go above and beyond requirements that affect the look and feel of the site include site design, public realm improvements, and building style. The project is set to include an expanded sidewalk with brick paver strip, decorative retaining wall, outdoor seating area, and a bike share station. The project also proposes several public street furniture elements including trash cans and benches that are consistent with styles identified in the Downtown Hershey Master Plan and are intended to encourage a welcoming and walkable area. The proposed hotel will also include decorative elements that will integrate well with Hershey’s historic downtown look, incorporating the use of limestone, red brick, and façade articulation.
In addition to the aesthetic enhancement to the neighborhood, this project will provide economic benefits to Hershey by providing additional revenue through increased consumer spending, employment opportunities, and tax revenue. The project will be within walking distance of shops and restaurants in Downtown Hershey.
